Making a 60fps indie sports title Hey everyone, My name is Christian (Delphenium on the forums), and I am one of the developers of Super Mega Baseball and a co-founder at Metalhead Software. This is basically my first attempt at a ‘real’ blog post, but I hope that some of you will find what follows interesting. What I’d like to talk about today is what it means for a game to ‘run at 60fps’, and perhaps explain some of things that go into making this happen in non-developer terms. If you have ever been curious about what goes into something like this, keep reading! People have been making games that run at a steady 60fps for a long time, I in no way claim that this is somehow a unique achievement. What I do hope to show you is the sheer scale of stuff that has to happen in a very short amount of time for this to be possible in a game such as SMB. First, a bit of an intro as to why this is relevant. SMB is, at its core, a high precision, high skill twitch game. It has an incredibly broad difficulty range, ranging from 0 (very easy), to 99, (almost impossible). The computer never ‘cheats’ in this game to make the game harder for you. What happens instead is that you have to provide more accurate and better timed input to perform well. It is very difficult to perform well at these kinds of twitch mechanics if the framerate is inconsistent, so running at a steady 60fps has always been a ‘must have’ for this game. The ‘feel’ of hitting, jumping, diving, etc is indescribably more precise at 60fps than at 30fps. NASCAR '15 Review (360/PS3)
For a game representing one of the more popular sports in North America, the release of NASCAR 15 has been relatively quiet. NASCAR used to command the same attention as other annual racing games and sports titles. This year, the Gamestop where I purchased my copy had only received two copies for each platform. Worse, the game comes with a large share of the usual warning signs: last-gen only, later than usual release date, exclusive retailer, budget price, etc. The biggest issue, however with NASCAR 15, is that it's really just a rescind NASCAR 14. MLB 15 The Show: Diamond Dynasty Ratings Boost Predictions (5/24/15)
We may or may not get a roster update tomorrow as it's Memorial Day weekend in the States. But whether the update comes Monday or Tuesday, it's time to predict who may be on the rise in the next roster update. I'll be breaking the predictions into tiers based on my own confidence level.
Ratings Boost Probability: High
Jason Kipnis - He got a plus-one boost last week, but he's done nothing but continue to hit. Ryan Braun - He was stripped of Gold status earlier in the year, but not many players have hit the ball better than Braun the past month. Kris Bryant - Bryant got a plus-two boost last week, but I still feel confident projecting him to get another upgrade. Prince Fielder - Fielder is back and healthy and he's been annihilating the ball as of late. Brandon Crawford - This is probably a little overdue as Crawford is hitting .350 the last month. Dexter Fowler - Fowler just has a good mix of power and speed going this year. Brandon Belt - Belt is crushing the ball in May, and it seems maybe he's putting it together. Shelby Miller - Miller had the near no-hitter and has just been really good. Based on his price in the marketplace, most others think he's getting a boost as well. A.J. Burnett - Burnett is another one people in the marketplace are already expecting to get a ratings boost. It's fair at this point, his numbers are silly. Jason Hammel - Hammel has just been really good this year, and even better over the past month. Mike Bolsinger - Bolsinger is rolling. He's 27 and not a hot-shot prospect, but I would still be a little surprised if he doesn't get a boost. James Paxton - Paxton is having just a solid year. Jeremy Lin Not Loving His End of Year NBA 2K15 Ratings
A lot of 2K fans out there were probably just happy to get everybody back and healthy in the end-of-year NBA 2K15 roster update, but Jeremy Lin is not too psyched his ratings dipped from 78 at the start of the season to a 75 overall at the end of the year. "This game is rigged," said Jeremy Lin in the accompanying YouTube video on his friend AJ Rafael's YouTube channel. Once he got past looking at the grades and looked at the ratings by the numbers, he softened his stance a bit. Still, Jeremy Lin was left in shock when his Strength rating was revealed to be a 35. After showing the camera his bicep, he recovered long enough to be in agreement with his high quickness and speed ratings. But at the end of the day, it's another athlete not in love with his video game ratings. Lin's scoring efficiency did dip a bit this season, but between Byron Scott shying away from three-pointers and the Lakers not having the same type of floor spacing as the Rockets, that's not a real surprise. His defense continued to be underrated, and overall while some will call his season in LA a disappointment, I think Lin showed he will have no problem continuing to be a solid contributor in the NBA. In the meantime, he's put his fans to work by telling them to tell the NBA 2K development team to boost his ratings. ChaseB
[​IMG] Programmer KingJavo has uploaded an early, incomplete version of his homemade PC editor, which allows gamers to alter all the teams and players on the Xbox 360 edition of All-Pro Football 2K8 in more ways than ever before. Version of the editor, which can be downloaded for free from Mediafire, will only work on Windows computers. KingJavo's latest software offers several improvements over All-Pro Football 2K8's previous PC editing program, which was released in April of 2011, and was coded by fellow Operation Sports community member, FlyingFinn. Here are some of the new features:
  • Can change any player name or team name in the game
  • Can switch any player's announced play-by-play name
  • Can place any of the retired legends' faces onto other players
  • Can choose every player's attended college
  • Can select any signature player animation, such as Deacon Jones' head slap, Walter Payton's high step, Lester Hayes' low defensive stance, or Dan Marino's throwing/playaction motions
  • Adds hidden "Bullet Time" and "Helmet High Tackles" player abilities
  • Can swap out any of the 24 CPU-controlled teams and make them one of the 8 user-controlled teams (or vice versa)
  • Improved roster sorter that shows a separate page for each team
  • Can change a team's home stadium without having to reset their roster of generic players
Due to the roster file check that All-Pro Football 2K8 performs whenever you ask the game to access Xbox Live, some of these features (like rewriting names) will only work in offline mode.
